Reifenhäer Kiefel Extrusion (RKE) to Present New Evolution 9-Layer Blown Film Extrusion Line at K 2010
Market trends suggest that the food industry has a growing demand for packaging that prolongs the shelf-life of packaged goods. This mainly concerns lidding sheets for laminating to BOPP, BOPET and BOPA, thermoforming sheets, bag-in-box packages and bags of all types. It should be noted that 7-layer film is the established standard in the market today. The migration to 9-layer technology is driven by improved film characteristics, down-gauging and cost savings. The RKE Evolution 9-layer system uses advanced technologies. The system’s centrepiece is its extruder/film blowing die combination. The new Evolution extruder excels through flexibility in the processing of polyolefins and raw barrier materials such as EVOH, PA and PETG, and it has a wide throughput range at low melt temperatures. The line is designed for trouble-free production with a wide variety of recipes in the industry. The rheological and thermal design of the die permits manufacturers to consistently produce extremely thin film layers with highly accurate thickness ratios of the individual layers. With its ideal surface texture and melt channel geometry, the die allows for quick product changes and very short raw-material dwell times. The film-cooling unit has been redesigned and adapted to the particular characteristics of barrier film requirements. This permits barrier films to be run at throughput rates that were only possible with polyolefines until now. Proper film guiding is critical when handling barrier film: When exiting the die gap, the film bubble is characterised by an overlay of several freeze lines. Depending on the type of film structure, very thick and stiff films can be produced that need to be flattened gently. Since the film has to be visually pleasing to the end user, the deflection at the turner bar must not produce any scrapes or wrinkles. To accomplish this, Reifenhäuser Kiefel Extrusion offers patented solutions with brush rolls and microporous turner bars.
