AIMPLAS has coordinated with nine other companies and technological centers in order to launch new recyclable packages for cheese and fresh food.
The packaging that is already being used by partners of the project Mercadona Central Quesera Montesinos will be transparent, multilayer and totally biodegradable.
At least two types of thermoplastic and biodegradables materials will be combined in the design of the new package, mainly the polylactic acid (PLA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH).
Nuria López the main researcher of the project said “The function of AIMPLAS in this project as well as being coordinator are focused on the development of biodegradable and barrier material necessary to fulfill requirements of packaged food.”
Adding “the different layers of the package ensure the consumer that they will extend the lifespan of food, however the new packages will be manufactured with, at least, 75% of raw materials from renewable sources, so they will be biodegradable.”
The packaging is said to be already developing quickly with companies using their expertise to improve the overall product.
Mercadona Central Quesera Montesinos are responsible for applying new wax coatings to maintain the lifespan of the food while manufacturer PLA Hycail will develop a biodegradable adhesive suitable for being processed through co-extrusion technologies.
Other companies who are set to use the packaging include Belgian company Altoni-Kelderman,and German company Sachsenmilch. The Finish investigation center Abo Akademi, French company Bobino Plastique, and the German technological center Fraunhofer IVV will focus on the development of waxes used for the coating.
