Circular Plastic Alliance Declaration
"The Circular Plastic Alliance Declaration is a clear commitment to increase uptake of recycled content in new plastic products."
More than 100 European trade organisations, including TEPPFA, companies and public authorities, signed the declaration – a strong commitment to develop actions to voluntarily increase the uptake of recycled content into new plastic products in Europe. The objective is 10 million tonnes by 2025.The Circular Plastics Alliance was launched in Brussels on 5 February 2019 at a high-level plastics industry meeting chaired by Jyrki Katainen, Vice-President of the European Commission.
TEPPFA President Fausto Bejarano said: “The declaration is a significant step forward for our industry. Its global reach and high-level endorsement by the European Commission acknowledges that plastics have an important contribution to the wellbeing of society today and in the future. We have embarked on an exciting journey, and TEPPFA members remain committed to our role in delivering on the overall targets.”
During the meeting the key stakeholders decided to set up a joint ambitious project to meet the 10 million tonnes objective by 2025.
Operational working groups were set up to work on five priority areas which resulted in the Circular Plastic Alliance Declaration.
Plastics plays a major role in shifting the economy from a linear to a circular model, and plastic pipe manufacturers have recognised the need to be sustainable and have integrated design for recycling in their new product development strategies.
Research continues to find further possibilities, with innovative converting technologies being developed to increase the reuse of recycled materials.
