In order to qualify for L7e vehicle classification for lightweight electric cars, the ILO1 had to weigh no more than 450kg without batteries, making it a test case for lightweight technologies.
The challenges smart mobility require transport systems that are constantly being developed and improved. The ILO1 has been designed to meet requirements for new, autonomous, transportation solutions. There are currently four ILO1s in service on the roads. The fifth, which will premiere in the first week of April, incorporates a number of improvements over its predecessors, as well as state-of-the-art technology as advanced as anything offered by the household name manufacturers.
Armin Müller, founder and managing director of Emm! Solutions, said: "On the test track the ILO1 is now able to accept driving instructions, complete assigned routes autonomously, recognise objects via a combination of on-board systems and external data input, respond to traffic signs and traffic lights, pick up a passenger at a designated stop and drop him or her off again at a specific point.”
Furthermore, the compact Model 5 ILO1 produces zero emisisons and interfaces with local transport infrastructure, rendering it ideal for smart urban mobility.
Weight and see
Lightweight construction was key to the design of the smart automobile, with its outer skin made from a very thin CRP laminate, and many parts made from metal or plastic using 3D printing technology.
Dr Wolfgang Seeliger, Leichtbau BW CEO, which is organising the debut in conjunction with Baden-Württemberg International, added: "We see a triangle of technologies here – lightweight construction, digitisation and additive manufacturing – which work together to produce significant added value."
Lightweight construction will feature prominently during the Hannover Messe event, where users from all sectors of industry will meet experts who will help augment their products’ impacts through weight-saving technologies.
More than 100 business enterprises and industry associations will be presenting intelligent lightweight solutions across the spectrum.
