Cardboard-plastic combinations as a sustainable packaging choice are helping reduce plastic consumption whilst ensuring high-quality appearance and stability.

Sustainable packaging from Greiner contains 50 per cent PCR PP
Detergent packaging produced by Greiner Packaging for Henkel now contains 50 per cent rPP
Henkel’s Persil 4in1 DISCS detergent packaging, which is produced by Greiner Packaging, is a prime example. Now even more sustainable, it contains 50 per cent recycled polypropylene (r- PP) from household waste.
K3, the cardboard-plastic combination from Greiner Packaging, combines high-quality packaging with appealing marketing communication and a positive environmental contribution. K3-F packaging products from Greiner helps reduce the use of plastic and received a Henkel Sustainability Award in January 2019.
The cardboard wrap and the plastic container can be easily separated and recycled. Because the components can be disposed of separately, the consumer benefits. The packaging’s lower plastic content helps to reduce carbon emissions, while the cardboard wrap maintains the container’s stability.
Cardboard with 92 per cent recycled content is used to make the sleeve, and the container now includes 50 per cent rPP.
Greiner Packaging uses a two-layer process to create the new design. While the inside of the plastic container is made of white virgin material, the outer layer includes PCR PP, which has no impact on the look of the packaging.
Joint efforts
Andreas Auinger, International Project Manager at Greiner Packaging, said: “By using rPP, we’re taking another important step forward in terms of the sustainability of our cardboard-plastic packaging materials. Thanks to our innovative two-layer process, we’re meeting the highest standards of sustainability while also making sure that the packaging’s attractive appearance is retained.”
Henkel pursues ambitious packaging targets to help avoid and reduce plastic waste and foster a circular economy. By 2025, Henkel aims to cut the amount of virgin plastics in its consumer products in half.
Both Greiner Packaging and Henkel are signatories to the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment launched by the UK- based Ellen MacArthur Foundation.
Whether round or rectangular, an injection moulded or a thermoformed container, Greiner Packaging supplies both the plastic container and the cardboard wrap, as well as closure solutions.
